The V-Spot Nail Spot is one of the cutest places we've ever seen. It's girly, has chandeliers, they do your nails, and they offer you a cocktail...enough said! Fun fact: Melissa was the first person to host a private event there for her bridal party the day before her wedding. It's exactly the right place for women to relax, rejuvenate, and beautify which is all thanks to owner, Vivian Rivera. Born and raised locally, mom to a grown son, and a true entrepreneur, Vivian was the perfect candidate for this month's Mom Boss of the Month!
As a nail salon owner, we need to start with the most important and pressing question…are your nails square or round?
Today, short & round! The beauty of nails is that you can change them from week to week.
Let’s be frank. There are a LOT of nail salons in Hoboken and the surrounding areas. What makes The V-Spot so different and how did you know your model would stand out?
I wanted a place that did not feel like a typical nail salon. A gathering spot, a place to feel like you're at a girlfriend's house. Someplace where you can hang out and feel pampered, Sit back, relax, and unwind. As a customer that is what I was looking for in a nail salon, I knew I couldn't be the only one.
What is your favorite thing about raising a family in the area?
I love the convenience of having everything nearby. Being born and raised here and then raising my son in the same area was great. It is easily accessible to so much and having the diversity that Hudson County brings- what can be better?!
You have a 30 year old son, which basically means you have been a superhero for the last 30 years! As moms, we know that our children are always our babies, but was there a moment that made you think “wow, he is really grown up”?
Yes, it is true that you will always see your children as babies. Perhaps the first time was when he first started driving and now that he is 30 is definitely another time! I haven't fully wrapped my brain around that one!
You started your business after your child was grown. What made you decide to take that leap and that this was the right time?
The timing was perfect. My son was already a young adult, so I was able to dedicate all my time and energy into my business. It's unfortunate that as mothers we have to make sacrifices. Had I started the business when he was younger, one of the two would have suffered and that part would have been the business. It's countless hours and dedication to start a business, especially as a solopreneur.
When you actually get some time to yourself, what are your favorite places to unwind in Hoboken or Jersey City?
Lately, Barbès has been my go-to! It is a nice change to the area. I am all about authentic, cultured restaurants. This place is great. I love the staff, the vibe, and the Bronzini Grille.
Sept 15- Oct 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. We are so honored to have you as our Mom Boss this month and also representing Hispanic female entrepreneurs. What do you think your culture’s values and traditions have taught you that you have brought with you into business?
Thank you! Being Latina/minority means you have to work extra hard in general. Hard work ethics formed by sacrifice. I run the business the same! Give it 100%.
What is the best business advice anyone ever gave you? How about the worst?
The best: Never worry about your competition
The Worst: Never worry about your competition
Tell us your funniest “Mom Fail” moment.
Just one?? My son (about 5 years old) says to me : Mommy, the milk feels lumpy. It was spoiled milk- It didn't just happen one time! (don't judge me!)
