The 2018 {Local} Mother's Day Gift Guide!

As Mother's Day quickly approaches, many of us scramble and scratch our heads to figure out a way to repay the woman who gave us life. No pressure there, right? While there's no material object (that I can afford, at least) to properly repay my mom for all that she's done for me, I sure can try. You might even find a gift or two for yourself-- isn't that half the fun of reading these guides? Show of hands? I hope you enjoy these local gift ideas and help to support small businesses in our community. They are part of what makes our Mile Square (and beyond) so special! Who run the world? MOMS.

I want to kick off the guide with something meaningful and memorable for the mom who has your heart. I love these dainty opal and Swarovski crystal beaded bracelets and the message behind Danielle’s company. After being diagnosed with an Atrial Septal Defect (or ASD, a type of congenital heart defect) in 2016, Danielle underwent surgery and began making jewelry while in recovery. (Her story here.) This Mother’s Day, I’ll be ordering the custom Swarovski Birthstone Bracelet for Charlotte’s “Grammy” with the birthstones of all of her grandchildren. Danielle’s original design, the heart bracelet, is still one of her most popular sellers. The best part? For any items purchased with a heart, a portion of the profits are donated towards the advancement of congenital heart defect research and treatment. Look good while doing good? Yes, please.

Because… Toddlers. How perfect are these glasses? While I won’t be sipping vino for a few more months, I am definitely requesting the set of 2 “reading glasses” this year. These are perfect for mom, grandma, book club, or even a favorite teacher in your life! Other options that your mom might enjoy? “Because… This Is Us” and “Thank God for my group chat” are two more of my favorites. Be sure to check out this local Hobokenite’s Etsy shop for other personalized gifts like clutches, jewelry pouches, and other drinkware (like the stainless steel tumbler above).

BONUS: Amarie is also on the Hook-Up card! Get 15% off all purchases. Just enter the last 4 digits of your barcode in the Promo Code section.

Ladies... it’s time for the sweet stuff. You might be thinking, there’s nothing special or revolutionary about giving chocolate to a mom. Um, no. Wrong. These truffles and bars are both special, revolutionary, and out of this world delicious. Elements Truffles are Ayurvedic chocolates (Ayurveda is a food science that reveals how to balance the five elements - earth, water, fire, air and ether - in our body). The founder, Alak, takes no shortcuts when it comes to crafting these artisan treats. While you can see that just from the dreamy packaging, their chocolates are raw and organic, free of dairy, refined sugar, GMO’s, gluten, soy, emulsifiers, and artificial ingredients. While based locally in Jersey City, Elements Truffles is committed to making a difference worldwide, so 25% of the profits go towards supporting the education of underprivileged children in tribal areas of India. Guilt-free chocolate – there ya go! Happy Mother’s Day 😉

If you’ve read my guides before, you know that I’m a huge fan of the store Kanibal & Co. in Jersey City. They have great gifts, really cool jewelry, home décor, and so much more. What you may not know is that they also offer unique classes and events led by local artists. These aren’t your typical classes either – try taking mom to a Leather Bookmaking Workshop, a Jewelry Workshop with Arcos Jewelry, a Macrame class (gorgeous example above) or if she’s game - wait for it… a taxidermy class. Check out their website for a calendar of events.

BONUS: They’re also on the Hook-up! Save 10% on full-priced items on Tuesdays.

This cocktail goes out to my Aunt Charlene on my husband’s side! She lovesss herself a good Bloody Mary and, friends, let me tell ya, this is the real deal. Made in the north but inspired by the south, this Bloody Mary mix is leagues above the bottled stuff we’re used to. Featured on Good Day New York,, and in Bar Biz magazine {just to name a few}, The Hoboken Mary is all natural, gluten-free, fat-free, and has 50% less sodium than other popular brands. Make mom, dad, or yourself (because hello, you deserve it) a traditional Bloody Mary or spice things up and go with a Bloody Maria (tequila instead of vodka) or make some Hoboken Mary Mussels with Remoulade sauce! Recipes can be found on the website, as well as a full list of local businesses who carry it.

Behold the mecca of gift shops - Washington General. I can't go in here without wanting to buy everything, including a new home to put it all in. This store is my go-to for gifts (especially last minute ones) because they have a great selection that is constantly changing with the seasons. The owner is a local mama who does such an amazing job of sourcing and curating items for the store. If you want something that is different, cheeky, and won't break the bank, consider these adorable planting kits. The one on the left is a set of 3 magnetic planters, which are perfect for small spaces. The one in the middle is part gag gift, part practical. These bon-bons remind me of Peggy from Married With Children, except that you can't actually eat them. While it looks like a box of chocolates, these are actually seed bombs that are perfect for an experienced or novice gardener. Sure you can make your own seed balls, but ain't nobody got thyme for that! Sorry, I had to. #momjoke

Ok, time to get back to the sweet stuff. If you like the idea of combining eating and education in a Mother’s Day gift, consider a hands-on baking class at Choc O Pain, right here in Hoboken. Not only does this French Bakery & Café have delicious pastries, sandwiches, sweet treats, and coffee, but you can actually make-and-take home macarons, artisan bread, or my personal favorite – French croissants! Check their website for a schedule of upcoming classes held at their downtown 1st street location.

BONUS: Another Hook-Up vendor! Stop by from 2:00- 4:00 PM during the week to get half-price drinks with the purchase of food.

Keeping in the spirit of supporting local #girlbosses, I had to include one of my newer favorites in this year’s guide. The owner, Kirsten La Greca, was named one of Hudson County’s Women to Watch in 2017. I swoon over her Instagram feed, which is filled with beautiful pictures of Hoboken (where she resides), travels near and far, and of course, her line of apparel & accessories. Rosa Gold is probably most known for the comfy-cozy Blanket Scarves that can be monogrammed with up to 3 letters. These beautiful personalized scarves make the perfect gift for any mother, grandmother, friend, or relative. Choose from lightweight ‘summer’ scarves or heavier options designed for cooler temperatures. I also love this Mama Bird t-shirt for a new or expecting mom in your life. As if you needed yet another reason to buy something, Rosa Gold gives back by donating portions of sales to two different charitable organizations; Pencils of Promise (which works to build schools in developing countries) and DonorsChoose (which helps teachers here in the US by funding requests for supplies, books and technology to use in the classroom).

Need an escape? Do you frequently dream about floating around an island in the middle of nowhere all by yourself? Well, unfortunately we're not giving away any vacations this year, but you can plan an escape (or nudge your spouse to book an appointment for you) at right here in Jersey City. You will have 90 glorious minutes ALONE, while floating in zero gravity. If you're lucky enough to escape for more than 90 minutes, consider a trip to their infrared sauna as well. For more spa offerings, please visit their website.

Looking for a little something for a mommy friend? Maybe a mentor or teacher? I love these succulent magnets and bottle stoppers for so many reasons. Number one - because you can't kill them! These succulents are actually faux but look fancy AF and make awesome gifts. Number two- you can write a funny note like "Your kid's artwork may not be pretty, but at least the magnet is". The West Nest is based out of Hoboken and will be at the Arts & Music Festival this weekend. Check out their Etsy site for more products, including larger succulent designs and terrariums.

If your mother is anything like mine, she expects a card and flowers at the very least. It’s hard to choose just one local flower shop to feature, so instead, I’m rounding up a few different ideas and favorites for you.

~If you’re confident that the recipient can keep flowers alive, I recommend a beautiful orchid or bouquet from Hudson Flowers. They have a great selection AND they’re on the Hook-Up card as well.

~Not quite sure Mom can keep those buds alive? I love the idea of giving those ‘forever roses’ that don’t die before they’ve had a chance to make your house look good. The gorgeous roses from Empire de Fleurs (top left) last up to a year and are delivered right to your door. Bonus: You can save 10% on small boxes and 15% on the medium & large with your Hook-Up card.

~Wait too long to order? Another adorable local flower shop is Unique Flowers here in Hoboken. They have the cutest succulent arrangements (see picture, top right) and also carry a small selection of forever roses.

~Prefer a plant to a bouquet of flowers? I love Soho Flower & Design for aloe plants, agave, and even pomegranate plants! I’m also obsessed with their terrariums. They do have beautiful flowers as well and luckily for us, are on the Hook-Up too!
