Contributor Collaboration: Blowout Options

We get so many questions on the best blowouts in town. We looked at our top three favorites voted by YOU in our 2016 Little Hoboken Awards and sent out two of our contributors to give you the scoop! As a makeup and hair expert, our Makeup Junkie Mama, Amy Duskin, was perfect for the task and with her head of AMAZING hair, our Pinterest Mama, Nina Hennessy, seemed like the perfect fit!

First Stop: Up and Out

My first stop was the downtown location of Up and Out. This style-only salon offers blowouts, updos, and makeup application. They use & sell Moroccan Oil products which are fantastic. He started with the Moroccan Oil Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner. My stylist Christian was so warm and friendly. After some complimentary tea and a brief consultation on what style I was looking for, he got to work! I asked for a blowout with some bounce and that is what I got! My hair had some amazing waves at the end and a lot of body which was exactly what I asked for. My blow out lasted for days with a little help of some dry shampoo (My favorite is Klorane)

Up and Out was definitely a great salon! They have 2 locations (uptown & downtown), with the uptown location being a full service salon. Psst: they are also opening a hair school and event space on Newark St later this year!) Details on their site!

Next Stop: Salon Gatto

Salon Gatto is hidden away on the waterfront and is such a Hoboken gem. With hair dryers hanging from the ceiling, and a custom drink menu, this salon has such a modern look and feel. My stylist Andrea washed my hair with Oribe Brilliance and Shine Shampoo and Conditioner. If you haven't tried this line of hair care, it is about as luxurious as it gets. I'm not a fan of strong smelling products, but something about the smell of these products is just intoxicating. Andrea used their Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray which helps with blow dry time and makes hair shiny. She also used Super Shine Light Moisturizing Creme for frizz. I asked for a blowout with some bounce and curl at the end. Andrea got me in and out rather quickly and my blowout was just what I asked for. She sprayed in a little of Oribe's Texturizing Spray and since I never like my hair too straight and this adds the perfect amount of texture to it.

Salon Gatto is a full service salon. For prices and more information on all of the services they offer please visit their website.

I also use Beautycounter's Sea Salt Spray to extend my blowout an extra day and add a natural tousled wave.

Blo-It-Out Lounge

I've walked by Blo-It-Out Lounge on 12th & Washington countless times, always longingly looking into the window while sporting my messy mom bun, so I was extra excited when I finally got to stop in. As usual, I was running late but instantly felt my mood lifted once I arrived and was greeted by a giant Marilyn Monroe photo. All the girls inside were so friendly and showed me right to my chair so I could look over the extensive menu and they could crab me a drink. You can choose an updo, braid, or one of their signature blo-out styles which have cocktail inspired names.

Next time I definitely want to try a Kardashian-inspired braid--don't judge me!

There were so many options, so I just gave my stylist free reign. I also mentioned that I was hoping to make this blow out last as long as possible (blow dry time is hard to come by with a toddler), so she offered to use just the right amount of product to hold my style but not get greasy. After settling on my "just do whatever you want" style she gave me a quick shampoo in one of the cozy purple and white chairs in the back of the salon and got right to work on my hair. They have a TV strategically placed so you can zone out and relax during your blowout, but the time flew by chatting with the stylists and other customers. The salon has such a warm, welcoming vibe that you just feel comfortable and happy to hang out.

After what felt like 5 minutes, my chair was spun around to face the wall of mirrors and reveal my perfect shiny beachy waves. She explained that since I wanted to keep the blow out as long as possible she chose easy loose waves so that even if some start to fall they won't be noticeable, and then handed me a free Batiste Dry Shampoo sample. Perfect!

The salon provided the services mentioned free of charge so that we could write this post.
