My daughter and I spent an entire afternoon exploring all the activities included in the Outside the Box by Cheeky Days Subscription Box we received. Each monthly box includes a children’s t-shirt or wearable item, a children’s book, 2-4 crafts or activities, community cards with ideas to spark creativity, a spotlight on a nonprofit or charity, and a special surprise. If you have more than one child you also have the option to add an additional wearable item and extra craft supplies. The theme of our box was “Art with a Heart” and it focused on ways that art can transform and inspire within a community.
Included in this month’s box was the book Maybe Something Beautiful. My daughter loved it so much we read it 3 times in a row! The book was based on the true story of how art transformed a neighborhood in San Diego, CA and both the illustrations and story were beautiful. I was pleasantly surprised that the story was straight forward enough for a 2 year old, and could spark a great conversation with a 7 year old.
Continuing with the theme of art impacting our community, the Periwinkle Foundation was this box’s featured nonprofit. They provide positive programs to children impacted by cancer and other illnesses at Texas Children’s Hospital. They also created The Splendid Review which is an anthology of poems and short stories written by children at the Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers. My daughter loved looking at the drawings and hearing the poems written by other children.
Now onto the crafts. Included in each box was a “Postcard From The Road” which we were able to decorate and write a note sending well wishes to one of the children featured in The Splendid Review (love this!). We also received an adorable artist smock from BEK Monkey with a Van Gogh Starry Night print. A canvas, paint palette, two colors of paint, and Sculpt*It Clay Mix which dries in the air not your oven. (We ended up adding some more colors of our own paint just to keep the activity going longer.) It also came with a Start Creative Doodle book which is the perfect size notebook to keep in your bag and break out in case of an entertainment emergency.
Last but not least, the special surprise for grownups was… COFFEE. I’m not a coffee connoisseur, I’m just tired, but the bag of Just Love Coffee was perfect to sip on while my daughter spent well over two hours easily entertained. It is definitely worth the monthly subscription to have this waiting at home for an easy afternoon activity.
