I am often faced with grilling questions that have sometimes left me feeling deflated, irritated, or like I was not living up to my ‘full potential’. Questions such as “What do you really want to be doing with your life?” This, to me, implies that being a nanny isn’t worthy of my time, commitment, or passion – when in reality, it’s fueling my passion for children and traveling.
I chose a career in nannying because I thoroughly enjoy being around children and learning about their development. Being a nanny means you are involved in this process day in and day out. You get to see your personal influences in their development and get to see the child flourish. I am so lucky to have watched and helped 3 children learn, grow, and change daily over the past 4 years.
I think what appeals to me most about being a nanny is that I get to interact with the whole family, which has a deeper and more lasting benefit to both the child and myself. I take pride in being part of the process of helping to raise a child, taking with me many happy memories. I enjoy the bond you are able to build as a nanny with the child. It is a cherished relationship, one that is completely unique.
Being a nanny has allowed me to create an incredible life surrounded by wonderful children and their families. It has taken me to places I could never have imagined. It’s such an interesting way to see the world, not only do I have the most fulfilling job and get to go on fabulous vacations with my nanny family, but I have lived in Italy and now in the U.S., both of which have given me a real insight into other cultures and their way of life. I find it absolutely fascinating. It is a unique experience with a big learning curve, which has offered me many exciting opportunities.
Had I not been a nanny I wouldn’t have met all of the amazing people and lifelong friends I have made. I have met 4 of my very best friends since moving around for my job, 2 right here in Hoboken!
Being a nanny has changed my life in so many ways, I’ve adopted the patience of a saint, gained excellent organization and time management skills (as you know getting 4 of us fed and out of the door by 7:30 AM AND looking respectable is a big accomplishment!). I truly believe I’ve became a better person since becoming a nanny. I appreciate the simple things and live in the moment. Children are a pleasure to be around (95% of the time) and they help keep us grounded to the true meaning of life. I understand the simple joys in life (sitting quietly for two minutes) taking in all of the sites and getting excited over mundane things the way children do.
As a nanny I see parents, children, and affluent neighborhoods differently. I see so many different personalities and ways that parents raise their children. Seeing this has shaped me and taught me to be tolerant, accepting, open-minded, and understanding. We are all different. We are all doing what we think is best.
I may be paid to teach them, but they’ve taught me so many priceless lessons I could never have expected. They’ve given me so many heart-warming memories--moments I’ll treasure forever.
I fell into nannying and it’s been the most incredible experience so far. I can’t imagine doing anything else! #NannyLife
