Holistic Momma: Natural Cold Fighters

Winter is here, and along with hot chocolate, snowball fights, and indoor playdates comes cold and flu season! You know the drill - once one person in the house gets sick, everyone's sick! We are especially vulnerable in a city like Hoboken, where we are pushing elevator buttons, sharing Ubers, and riding the packed bus to NYC. My favorite cure for a cold is prevention! Here's how I'm keeping my family healthy this winter, and what to do if a cold strikes.

Every morning, I take a shot glass full of apple cider vinegar. ACV has antibacterial properties, and helps to alkalize your body which in turn helps to fight off colds. The taste is intense, so best to shoot it back quick and have water ready! Honey is a much more palatable remedy for sore throats. A spoonful straight or in a cup of tea is very soothing.

I also love to pack my diet with vitamin C rich foods like oranges, and even veggies like broccoli or kale. I'm a fan of Emergen-C drink powder for that extra boost (although natural food sources are always best).

I first heard of the Neti pot on the Oprah show many years ago. It's literally a tiny pot that you fill with water and saline to clean your nasal passages. It's messy and kind of gross, but it feels amazing when you get all the winter sniffles out!

A healthy gut is your bodies best chance of fighting off illness. Winter is a great time to add a probiotic supplement to your regimen, and be sure to add fermented foods like yogurt or sauerkraut.

As a nurse, I know that sometimes the home remedies may not be enough. If you have a persistent cough, fever, extreme fatigue and/or body aches, I definitely recommend calling your doctor.

Stay warm and healthy everyone!
